About a month ago, the world’s largest marine park was established off the coast of New Caledonia. It’s called Le Parc Naturel de la Mer De Corail (The Natural Park of the Coral Sea), and it’s about twice the size of Texas, making it the largest protected area on earth. The South Pacific sanctuary is home to an abundance of marine life, including 48 different shark species, 25 mammal species, 19 nesting bird species and five sea turtle species, not to mention the 1.1 million acres of the vibrant coral reefs that cover the ocean floor and the 3,000 tons of fish that hang out in and around this space.
The active preservation of the park is a milestone in marine conservation, and of course, it adds another fantastic site to New Caledonia, making this the perfect time to plan an adventure to the South Pacific. Over the coming years, the park will be separated into a few different zones, some of which will be open to recreational activities including snorkeling, swimming, and fishing. Be one of the first to experience this aquatic treasure!
